Daegu to Build a 353.9 Billion Won AI Campus in Suseong Alpha City... DGIST Signs Agreement
Daegu City and DGIST will create a campus in Suseong Alpha City that combines AI education, research, industry, and residential functions. The total project cost is about 353.9 billion won, and four facilities, including an AI college and an industrial AX innovation hub, will be built in phases.
If an educational space for nurturing AI talent, corporate research and demonstration facilities, and living spaces for researchers were all gathered in one place, what kind of change might that bring to a local AI industry? Daegu City and the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) have decided to create a campus in Suseong Alpha City that brings these functions together. The total project cost is about 353.9 billion won.
Daegu City and DGIST signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of the “Suseong Alpha City Campus,” which will be built around 888, Daehung-dong, Suseong-gu. The planned site covers 12,847 square meters of land and has a total floor area of 40,115 square meters. The project will be carried out in stages with funding from national government money, city funds, and private resources.
The campus will center on four facilities. The AI College will operate separately from the existing academic system and will be responsible for training professionals in AI convergence. The Industrial AX Innovation Hub will support joint research, technology demonstration, and industry-academia-research cooperation tailored to corporate needs. Here, AX refers to “AI transformation,” meaning the use of artificial intelligence to change the operations and services of companies and industries.
The AX Demonstration R&D Center plans to support advanced technology development and verification by attracting global research institutions and building a foundation for joint research. D-Alpha House will provide residential functions for graduate students, faculty, and visiting researchers. The idea is to consider not only education and research, but also application in the industrial field and day-to-day living conditions.
What matters in a local AI ecosystem is not only training talent, but also connecting the technologies they learn to corporate research and real-world services. If the four campus facilities establish a cooperative system as planned, they could become a foundation for strengthening ties among education, research, and industry. That said, since the project will be implemented in phases, when each facility will be completed and what kinds of research and educational programs will be operated there will be clarified going forward.
Based on this agreement, Daegu City says it will expand cooperation among educational, research, and industrial facilities in Suseong Alpha City and strengthen the foundation of the local AI industry. This article is based on a report by ShinAilbo.
