Mixed U.S. Treasury Yields as WTI Breaks $100: Concerns Grow Over an Economy Leaning on AI Infrastructure

With global oil prices climbing above $100 per barrel and hopes for reduced long-dated Treasury issuance unmet, the U.S. Treasury market moved in mixed fashion. A sharp selloff in tech stocks also drew buying into Treasuries in the afternoon, while concerns were raised about the impact of higher rates on fragile consumer spending and the housing market.

With global oil prices once again moving back above $100 per barrel, the U.S. Treasury market showed a mixed performance across maturities. Rising oil prices and the results of a U.S. Treasury survey on long-dated issuance weighed on bonds, but as technology shares sold off sharply, Treasury yields also moved lower in the afternoon.

According to Yonhap Infomax, as of 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the 16th, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note stood at 5.0970%, up 1 basis point from the previous trading day. The 30-year yield also rose 1 basis point to 5.4370%. By contrast, the 2-year yield, which is more sensitive to monetary policy, fell 1.3 basis points to 4.7360%. Because yields move inversely to bond prices, that meant short-dated bond prices rose slightly while long-dated prices edged lower on the day.

One of the factors that drew market attention was the U.S. Treasury’s Primary Dealer (PD) survey. Some investors had been hoping for hints that long-dated issuance might be reduced, but the published questionnaire remained at a fairly general level, asking what should be considered when thinking about future changes in auction sizes. A rates strategist at RBC Capital Markets, cited in the report, said that if some market participants were expecting a major shift such as ending 20-year issuance, they may have been disappointed.

Oil also added pressure to the bond market. West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery rose for seven straight trading sessions, closing at $101.41 per barrel. According to the report, it was the first close above $100 since the 18th of last month. On the same day, the U.S. import price index for September rose 1.1% from the previous month, exceeding the market forecast of 0.8%. Higher oil prices and import prices can heighten concerns that inflationary pressure may not fade easily.

That said, the mood shifted as tech stocks sold off heavily. Once the Nasdaq’s decline widened beyond 2%, buying flowed into Treasuries, which are seen as a safe haven, and yields fell across several maturities in the afternoon. The spread between the 10-year and 2-year yields widened to 36.10 basis points from the previous day, reflecting a steeper yield curve as short-term rates fell while long-term rates rose.

An economist quoted in the article pointed to the possibility of slower growth as a bigger risk than the immediate case for additional rate hikes. He explained that rate increases could weigh on vulnerable sectors such as low-income household spending and housing, while the economy may increasingly depend on building out AI infrastructure, which is relatively less sensitive to interest-rate changes. That can be read both as an argument that AI-related investment may serve as a pillar for the economy, and as a reminder of the vulnerability that comes with relying too heavily on a single growth engine.

According to CME FedWatch, the fed funds futures market priced in a 17.2% chance of a rate hike this month, down from the previous session. The odds of another hike by December were shown in the mid-80% range. Still, that is only the market’s pricing, not a confirmed policy decision. With oil, inflation, and tech stocks pulling in different directions, the Treasury market is likely to keep searching for direction between inflation pressure and growth concerns.
