OpenAI Revamps ChatGPT Extension for Chrome, From Comparing Open Tabs to Handling Work Tasks

OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT extension for Chrome, adding agent-style features that can compare information across multiple tabs at once and help with tasks like sending messages or filling out forms, in what appears to be a stronger push against Google Gemini.

If you keep several online shopping tabs open, comparing prices and shipping terms one by one can quickly become tedious. OpenAI’s revamped ChatGPT extension for Chrome is designed to help with exactly that kind of browser-based work. It can look across open tabs together and help you compare or organize the information you need.

According to IT Chosun, OpenAI rolled out a full update to the ChatGPT extension for Chrome on the 16th. Users can ask it to compare product details such as price, size, delivery time, and return conditions across multiple tabs and organize the results into a table. In other words, it reduces the effort of gathering information manually from page to page.

The update also includes an agent feature called “ChatGPT Work.” An agent refers to an AI function that goes beyond simply answering questions and helps carry out a series of steps in sequence. Reported examples include filling out documents for a hospital appointment, adding events to a calendar, and drafting an email after comparing terms from different contractors. It can also be instructed to send messages, fill in forms, or tidy up tabs.

The extension is available in the Chrome sidebar, allowing users to continue conversations and give work instructions without switching screens. However, according to the report, ChatGPT obtains permission to access the user’s entire search history. Since browser history can contain information about a person’s interests and activities, it is worth considering not only the convenience but also what kind of access is being granted.

The new extension is available to both free and paid users, and it is also compatible with Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera in addition to Chrome. After streamlining its own browser development efforts, OpenAI appears to be aiming to expand ChatGPT’s role within the Chrome ecosystem that so many users already rely on. As Google Gemini competes in the browser environment, it will be worth watching how tab analysis and actual task execution influence users’ choices.
